Reading and English Language Arts Assignments

6th Grade
  • We are reading The Stranger, by Chris Van Allsburg, this week.  Our skills are point of view and personification.  The test will be on Friday.
  • In grammar we are starting Unit 2 (nouns).  There will not be a test this week.
5th Grade
  • We are continuing to read Where the Red Fern Grows.  The children have their 6 vocabulary words in their reading journals, as well as on index cards which they have made to use when studying.  On Friday they will be expected to know the definition and part of speech for each word.  They will also be expected to be able to put them into sentences.  There is a possibility of a comprehension quiz this week, but that depends on how much reading we get done this week.  The skills they are working on this week are point of view and setting.
  • In grammar we are starting Unit 2 (nouns).  There will not be a test this week.

Math and Science Assessments

5th and 6th graders have both math and science assessments this week.

5th grade will test Wednesday on all of Chapter 1.  This will consist mostly of writing and solving numerical equations.  They already have a study guide sheet in their binders.

6th grade will complete a Mid-Chapter review (not a major test) on the first half of Chapter 2 on Friday.  They will be expected to change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.  They will also compare and order fractions and decimals as well as multiply fractions and mixed numbers.  .

5th grade will test tomorrow on the 4th and 5th lessons of Chapter 1.  We completed a good review today, and they should do well.

6th grade will test Friday on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th lessons of Chapter 1.  They will have a study guide in their binders by Wednesday.

*I continue to be pleased with the progress being made by these two classes, especially in math.  We are beginning to be able to move a little faster and cover more ground.

The 6th graders are bringing home a study guide for their test on the Civil War.  The study guide is due on Thursday, and the test will be Friday.  I have advised the children to begin the study guide tonight, so they can ask any necessary questions in class over the next few days.  We will be going over the study guide in class and reviewing over the next few days.
