Between Shades of Gray Literary Information (Important for 6th grade parents)

Parents,

A few of the children purchased a particular book, Between Shades of Gray, from the book fair.  It is a New York Time’s Best Seller and has received a great deal of literary praise.  The summary on the back cover of the book is interesting, but upon further inspection I have noted some mature themes within the story.  Due to the fact that this novel is based on true historical occurrences several parts of the story can be deemed as emotionally disturbing.  If your child purchased this book or is considering reading it, I urge you to carefully review it first.  I have included the synopsis from the back cover below, as well as the address of the author’s website.

Thank you,

Mrs. Hill

“In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina is preparing for art school, first dates, and all that summer has to offer. But one night, the Soviet secret police barge violently into her home, deporting her along with her mother and younger brother. They are being sent to Siberia. Lina's father has been separated from the family and sentenced to death in a prison camp. All is lost.

Lina fights for her life, fearless, vowing that if she survives she will honor her family, and the thousands like hers, by documenting their experience in her art and writing. She risks everything to use her art as messages, hoping they will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive.

It is a long and harrowing journey, and it is only their incredible strength, love, and hope that pull Lina and her family through each day. But will love be enough to keep them alive?

Between Shades of Gray is a riveting novel that steals your breath, captures your heart, and reveals the miraculous nature of the human spirit.”

Why does Karana decide she must kill the leader of the dog pack?  What changes her mind?

Why do you think the leader of the dog pack begins to trust her, rather than want to harm her?

Karana’s life changes after she befriends
Rontu.  Have you ever had a pet or human friend who has changed your life?  If so, can you describe how?

Math and Science News

The fifth and sixth grade students have both a math test (ch. 4) and a science test (ch. 4) coming up later this week.  Their math tests will both be on Thursday.  We will complete a review of the chapter in class tomorrow, and the students will bring home this completed and corrected review.
Science tests will be on Friday.  Tomorrow they will be given a study guide for the entire chapter.  In addition, each student has a biome project to complete by Friday.  I have had one of the sixth grade projects turned in already.  Below are the guidelines for making either a tri-fold brochure or a power point presentation.  If you choose a power point, you may email it to me at stoned0603@gmail.com.
Guidelines for project:
Page 1:  Cover or eye-catching introduction
Page 2:  Where this particular biome is located in the world (Choose 1 location.)
Page 3:  Organisms to be seen or with which to interact.
Page 4:  What activities can you do there?

6th Grade Tuck Everlasting Projects

We finished reading Tuck Everlasting last week!  Today the children chose their cumulative project from the items listed below.  I am posting the directions for all three options, so the children can refer back to them at any time.  The projects are due Tuesday, November 27th.  If there are any questions (even during the Thanksgiving Break) please do not hesitate to e-mail me.

  1. Paper Bag Book Talk – Take a plain brown paper shopping bag and fill it with 5-7 items that represent important parts of the story: characters, setting, and conflict. You will use these props as you present your book report, explaining the significance of each item. The outside of the paper bag should be decorated to fit the theme of the story and should include the book’s title and author.

  1. Board Game – Design a board game with Tuck Everlasting as the theme. The game must include a game board, pieces to move around the board, written directions for how to play the game, and all other materials needed to play it. The game must be neatly and colorfully done, fun to play, and relate strongly to the book. If there are obstacles in the story, they should be the obstacles in the game. You will present your project by sharing the game with us, explaining how to play and how it relates to your book.

  1. Character Monologue – Pretend to be one of the characters in the book, and tell us the story as that character in first person (using pronouns like I and we). You must submit a written script of your monologue.

6th Grade Industry Giants Writing Project

Industry Giants Writing Project

Directions:  You will complete a three paragraph research paper about one “giant” company of today.  The project is due on Wednesday, November 14th.  You will be asked to bring in a rough draft of your work no later than Monday, November 12th, for me (Mrs. Hill) to check.  You may choose one of the companies listed below to research.  No more than two people will be allowed to research a single company.  You must do all of your own research and writing – this is not a group assignment.  The details of the project are outlined below.

The company that I will be researching is __________________________________________.

Content – Your three paragraph writing project will contain the following information, and adhere to the following format:

·         The first paragraph will provide a short, but informative history of the company.  You must include the date that the company was founded.

·         The second paragraph will present a brief biography of the company’s CEO/founder.  You must include information about the person’s birth date and place and educational background.  If the original CEO/founder of the company is deceased, you must provide information about his/her death.

·         The third paragraph will describe the uniqueness of the company’s “product”, and how it contributes to the present day economy in a positive manner.  *You will receive a hint about this information when you choose the company that you will research.

Writing – Your writing project must comply with the following guidelines about proper grammar and mechanics usage, and composition:

·         Your writing project will consist of three well written paragraphs.

·         Your paragraphs must be made up of 4-6 sentences.

·         The first line of each paragraph must be indented.

·         All sentences must be complete (no fragments or run-ons).

·         You must use varied sentence structure – a combination of compound sentences, complex sentences, simple sentences, and appositives.

·         Your final paper must not contain any spelling or grammatical errors.

·         Your final copy of your paper must be typed in Times New Roman 12 font and single spaced.

·         Your paper must have a title that is centered at the top of your paper.  Your name, date, and subject must be typed in the upper right hand corner (just like we do in class).

·         You must hand in a hard copy of your paper no later than November 14th.

Bibliography – Your paper will include a bibliography (list of the resources you used to get your information).  We will go over the bibliography format in class, and yours must follow it exactly.  You must use two resources to research your company – only one may be an internet website or webpage.  Your second resource will be a book, magazine, or newspaper.  The bibliography format is laid out on the page that you were handed in class.

5th Grade Where the Red Fern Grows Book Report Options

This past week we finished reading Where the Red Fern Grows. I offered 3 options for book reports, and the children voted to do 2 of them. Oddly enough, all of the boys picked the same one, and all of the girls picked the same one. :) (I love these kids!) Anyhow, below are the directions for both book report options that were chosen.  All projects are due on Monday, October 29th.

Collage/Painting the Coleman Home as Depicted in Chapter II

Materials:
  • 1/2 sheet of white poster board

You can also look on the Internet for pictures of the Ozark Mountains in Oklahoma (where the story was set) for inspiration. You will need to put your name, date, and subject in the upper right hand corner of your poster (just like we do in class). I would also like for you to give a title to your poster. Be creative and neat - it counts!

  • 1/2 size sheet of white poster board

You will need to put your name, date, and subject in the upper right hand corner of your poster (just like we do in class). I would also like for you to give a title to your poster. • We are continuing to read Where the Red Fern Grows.  The children have their 6 vocabulary words in their reading journals, as well as on index cards which they have made to use when studying.  On Friday they will be expected to know the definition and part of speech for each word.  They will also be expected to be able to put them into sentences.  There is a possibility of a comprehension quiz this week, but that depends on how much reading we get done this week.  The skills they are working on this week are point of view and setting.

Math and Science Assessments

5th and 6th graders have both math and science assessments this week.

5th grade will test Wednesday on all of Chapter 1.  This will consist mostly of writing and solving numerical equations.  They already have a study guide sheet in their binders.

6th grade will complete a Mid-Chapter review (not a major test) on the first half of Chapter 2 on Friday.  They will be expected to change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.  They will also compare and order fractions and decimals as well as multiply fractions and mixed numbers.  .

5th grade will test tomorrow on the 4th and 5th lessons of Chapter 1.  We completed a good review today, and they should do well.

6th grade will test Friday on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th lessons of Chapter 1.  They will have a study guide in their binders by Wednesday.

*I continue to be pleased with the progress being made by these two classes, especially in math.  We are beginning to be able to move a little faster and cover more ground.

6th Grade ~ Materials Needed

The 6th graders require a few more supplies to help this year run smoothly.  Please send the following items by the dates indicated:
  • 1 yellow folder with pockets, due: Thursday 8/30/12  (Most children have these because they purchased their supplies through IAH.  However, if you did not do this your child needs a yellow folder.  This is what I use for Thursday folders to send work home in.)
  • 1 pack of 5 three ring binder dividers, due:  Tuesday 9/4/12
Thank you!

Mrs. Hill

Math in 5th and 6th grades

We have gotten off to a great start this year, and changing classes is working very well!
It was wonderful to get to visit with so many parents last Friday afternoon.  Both 5th and
6th grade classes have homework in math tonight for the first time.  The 6th graders will
have a mid-chapter check-up on Friday.  I will give each of them a worksheet based on the
test tomorrow!  It will be in the front pocket of their binders and will be labeled mid-chapter
check point.  I hope this will help them prepare for this test.  Fifth graders will not test until
some time next week.
Have a wonderful week!

1st Day of School

We had a wonderful first day of school!  Here a few reminders to help things continue to go smoothly:
  • Please remember that assembly starts each day at 7:50  a.m.  We will be in the classroom working by 8:00.
  • School will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m.
  • This year we are dismissing from the gym. The children will be in the gym at 3:10. Please drive to the sidewalk by the gym doors, and the teachers will help the children get to the cars.  If you plan to stay for an extended period of time, you may park by the office and walk down to pick up your children.
Thank you for all of your cooperation.  We are looking forward to a super school year!

*6th graders have homework policy and class rules signature pages that need to be signed, and returned to school by tomorrow.

Mrs. Stone’s and Mrs. Hill’s

5th and 6th Grade Classroom Homework Policy

Islamic Academy of Huntsville

2012-2012

Homework will only be given when necessary, and will always be meaningful.  The purpose of homework is to reinforce important skills and strategies taught in class.  Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Hill will work together to ensure avoidance of homework overload.  The homework policy is stated as follows:

·         Homework is expected to be turned in on time.  (Emergencies will be taken into account on an individual basis.)

·         If homework is late the student will have the choice of completing it during recess or having his/her name and a check mark placed in the discipline notebook.  The check mark will be erased if homework is turned in by the next day.

5th & 6th Grade Classroom Rules and Discipline Policy

Mrs. Stone’s and Mrs. Hill’s

5th and 6th Grade Classroom Discipline Plan

Islamic Academy of Huntsville

2012-2012

Students will be expected to follow rules in all areas of school life.  Rules will be posted in 5th and 6th grade classrooms.  A discipline notebook will travel with each class.  Student’s name placed in notebook for rule infraction will be considered a warning.  A 2nd infraction will result in a check mark placed next to name which will cause student to miss ½ of recess.  A third infraction, 2nd check mark, will result in lunch isolation.  Any further infractions will result in a trip to the office, and phone call to parents.  Students who receive no check marks each week will participate in game/activity time on Friday afternoons.  The following codes will be placed next to each student name and/or check mark in the discipline notebook to denote the nature of any infractions.

TO – talking out of turn/disrupting class

HW – homework not turned in on time
