6th Grade Social Studies Writing Projects Due Tomorrow

The 6th grade Industry Giants writing projects are due TOMORROW.  I have told the children that if they have any questions they may e-mail me before 7:00 p.m. tonight, and I will help them in any way that I can.  My e-mail address is attached to the original project directions that they received on Monday, November 5th.

5th and 6th Grades Reading and ELA 11/12 - 11/16

5th grade

• Grammar - Lessons 8-10 quiz on 11/12, regular and irregular verbs 11/13-11/16, next grammar quiz is scheduled for Mon. 11/19
• Reading - Treasures program with traditional Treasures Assessment on Friday
• Writing - Expository writing exercise about historical memorials of Washington D.C. (This project will require some at-home work and research this week.)

6th grade

• Grammar - Lessons 7-8 quiz on 11/13, subject verb agreement 11/14-11/6, next grammar quiz is scheduled for 11/20
• Reading - We will continue reading Tuck Everlasting.  We will have a small comprehension quiz on Tuesday.  There will not be a vocabulary portion of this quiz; it is strictly comprehension questions.  The quiz will cover chapters 6-12.  We are scheduled to finish this book next Monday.
• Writing/Social Studies - Please remember that rough drafts of Industry Giants Projects are due TOMORROW.  The final copy (typed and printed out) is due on WEDNESDAY.  All directions for this project are posted on this blog, and the students have hard copies as well.

The fifth graders have a mid-chapter check-up in math tomorrow.  They have study guides to review tonight and should do very well. 
They also have a Chapter 3 Science Test on Thursday and a Newspaper #6 Social Studies quiz on Friday.  They will bring home a study guide tomorrow to review for the science and will bring home all of their notes and the newspaper on Thursday to review for the social studies.

The sixth graders will test on Science Chapter 3 on Friday, bringing home a study guide for that test on Wednesday.

6th Grade Industry Giants Writing Project

Industry Giants Writing Project

Directions:  You will complete a three paragraph research paper about one “giant” company of today.  The project is due on Wednesday, November 14^th.  You will be asked to bring in a rough draft of your work no later than Monday, November 12^th, for me (Mrs. Hill) to check.  You may choose one of the companies listed below to research.  No more than two people will be allowed to research a single company.  You must do all of your own research and writing – this is not a group assignment.  The details of the project are outlined below.

Content – Your three paragraph writing project will contain the following information, and adhere to the following format:

·         The first paragraph will provide a short, but informative history of the company.  You must include the date that the company was founded.

·         The second paragraph will present a brief biography of the company’s CEO/founder.  You must include information about the person’s birth date and place and educational background.  If the original CEO/founder of the company is deceased, you must provide information about his/her death.

·         The third paragraph will describe the uniqueness of the company’s “product”, and how it contributes to the present day economy in a positive manner.  *You will receive a hint about this information when you choose the company that you will research.

 

Writing – Your writing project must comply with the following guidelines about proper grammar and mechanics usage, and composition:

·         Your writing project will consist of three well written paragraphs.

·         Your paragraphs must be made up of 4-6 sentences.

·         The first line of each paragraph must be indented.

·         All sentences must be complete (no fragments or run-ons).

·         You must use varied sentence structure – a combination of compound sentences, complex sentences, simple sentences, and appositives. 

·         Your final paper must not contain any spelling or grammatical errors.

·         Your final copy of your paper must be typed in Times New Roman 12 font and single spaced.

·         Your paper must have a title that is centered at the top of your paper.  Your name, date, and subject must be typed in the upper right hand corner (just like we do in class).

·         You must hand in a hard copy of your paper no later than November 14^th.

 

Bibliography – Your paper will include a bibliography (list of the resources you used to get your information).  We will go over the bibliography format in class, and yours must follow it exactly.  You must use two resources to research your company – only one may be an internet website or webpage.  Your second resource will be a book, magazine, or newspaper.  The bibliography format is laid out on the page that you were handed in class.

5th and 6th Grades ELA and Reading 11/5-11/9

5th Grade

• ELA - We will cover subject-verb agreement, agreement with be and have, and contractions.  There will be a quiz covering this information on Monday, November 12th.
• Reading - We will continue reading from the Treasures program.  Our skills will be context clues (vocabulary) and main idea and details (comprehension).  We will take our traditional Treasures test on Friday.

6th Grade

• ELA - We will cover simple verb tenses, perfect verb tense, and regular and irregular verbs.  There will be a quiz covering this information on Monday, November 12th.
• Reading - There will be a comprehension quiz on Chapters 1-5 of Tuck Everlasting tomorrow.  We will continue to read the story and work with similies, metaphors, setting, and plot.  The next Tuck Everlasting quiz will be next week.
